Preparation of specialists in the field of economy of light and food industry at University began in the 70th of last century.
The dean of the department is candidate of economical sciences, associate professor Esaidar Urzada Serimovna. 
 The department of economy and business at present time is one of the leading, perspective divisions of the University, realizing preparation of specialists who are in demand at the market.

    A great contribution to the development of the department has made a famous scientist, academician of NAS RK Naribayev Kupzhasar Naribaevich – the Minister of higher and high special education of Kazakh SSR, deputy chairman of State commission of Kazakh SSR Ministers’ Board, rector of al-Farabi Kazakh State University, Adviser of RK Prime-minister, who has been working as vice-rector on curricula work and international relations of ATU from 2002 till 2006.
One of the first in the republic in 2003 the department has passed to preparation of bachelors on credit system of training. At the department the scientifically methodological seminar works, training-center and the center of language preparation function. Preparation of the scientific staff in postgraduate study on a specialty «Economy and management of a national economy » is conducted.
At the department approaches to theoretical and professional knowledge of students are improved with a view of need of economy and changing requirements and structure of education in conditions of developing market.

  With a view of fastening theoretical knowledge and the skills received during training, students of department pass a professional practice on leading enterprises, in the organizations and bank establishments of the republic: joint-stock company "Bahus", joint-stock company "Rahat", joint-stock company BBC "Аksai", joint-stock company "Adal", joint-stock company "Altyn Dirmen", joint-stock company "Almaty-nan", "Kazkommertsbank", "BankTuranAlem", National bank, "Eximbank-Kazakhstan", tax committees, travel agencies, etc.

 The department was the initiator of ATU participation in competition for grant of Japan Official Assistance to Development “The roots of grass”, development of project “Program of Double Diploma” jointly with the University of NOVI and Education and Training Center of the Netherlands, which gives an opportunity to get along with the state diploma of RK about higher education the second diploma of bachelor of Dutch University of NOVI, acknowledging in European countries.

                                                         Prospects of development of the department provide wide introduction of information technologies of education, electronic textbooks and manuals, virtual laboratory works, the further creation of experts, consulting groups, expansions of innovative educational programs.
